Pickleball tourney raises funds, awareness of CK Community Foundation

The Chatham-Kent Community Foundation teamed up with the Chatham-Kent Pickleball Club to host its first pickleball tournament on Saturday at the St. Clair Healthplex in Chatham.

Bill Weaver, a director with the foundation, said it wasn’t necessarily about the money that was raised, but rather an opportunity to raise awareness about what the foundation does in the community.

Noting the foundation has been around for several years, he said a lot of people still don’t know how much it contributes to the community.

Foundation chair Janine Griffore said the $14-million plus endowment allows the foundation to support more than 85 charitable organizations by providing approximately $750,000 in funding annually.

“Your kindness allows us to provide grants that will impact our community,” she said.

Mayor Darrin Canniff was joined by Lefty, the mascot for the Chatham-Kent Barnstormers with the Intercounty Baseball League, to for the ceremonial first serve.

Calling the event a great community effort, Canniff said, “This is a microcosm of what makes Chatham-Kent so amazing” groups joining together to raise money for a great cause while getting together socially.

With all spots in the women’s, men’s and mixed flights filled, Weaver said, “The Chatham-Kent Pickleball Club was key to making this event happen.”

Pete Roelfsen, a pickleball club board member, said the club was happy to use its experience to organize the event.

He added many of those participating Saturday learned about the foundation.

The club is fortunate in that it has many members who are ready and willing to play.

“Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the world,” Roelfsen said. “Every year it’s doubling.”

He added a challenge the club sometimes encounters is having enough courts for everyone who wants to play.

Noting the club is focused on getting youth involved in the sport, Roelfsen said more details can be found online at www.ckpickleball.com.

VON Chatham-Kent’s Kids’ Circle Program

VON Chatham-Kent’s Kids’ Circle program is grateful for the recent grant from Chatham Kent Community Foundation to support program delivery to youth in our community. Program enhancements, like Art Therapy, are only possible through the generosity of our donors and community partners.

Our Kids’ Circle program is a unique charitable program that specializes in illness and bereavement support for children and teens at no cost to the client. Kids’ Circle provides bereavement support in one-on-one and group settings for children (under the age of 19), who are facing the loss of a loved one, have lost a loved one, or experiencing a life-threatening illness themselves. The program is offered throughout the entire Municipality of Chatham-Kent including strong ties to its’ First Nations communities.

The focus of the Kids’ Circle program is to provide an environment where they can feel safe to share their feelings. This support is delivered in a variety of settings including home, school, hospital, and supportive care sessions.

Duart Community Hall Renovation

On March 13, after a delicious roast beef dinner at the Duart Community Hall, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the outside renovations being completed on the hall. Several organizations were invited to help with the ribbon-cutting, as they donated to help with renovations. The hall provides space to support local families and youth, as well as a meeting space for local family-run businesses and the Highgate Lions Club. It has also partnered with Second Harvest Ontario to provide free weekly food distribution to local families.

Community Foundation Supports Wallaceburg Foodbank

Chatham-Kent – A food bank that supports families in Wallaceburg and Walpole Island has been able to respond to a 40% increase in the need for its services thanks to a grant from two local charitable foundations.

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Food Bank received a $4,000 grant from the Chatham Kent Community Foundation and the South Kent Wind Community Fund, a donor-advised fund of the CKCF. The grant was one of many announced by the CKCF last fall.

The food bank has used the grant money to buy non-perishable food and President’s Choice Gift Cards that cover the costs of perishable foods. Individuals and families are able to access the food bank once every 30 days.

The food bank assisted 931 families in 2023, an increase from 654 families in 2022.

Barb Wysman, Secretary of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Food Bank, said the funding came at a time when need in the community was growing.

“The Society of St. Vincent de Paul appreciates the support given by the Chatham Kent Community Foundation and South Kent Wind,” Wysman said.

“This work is very close to our hearts as we are called to help those who are less fortunate. We feel it is our responsibility to extend a helping hand to those who are struggling or facing difficulties. Without these funds we may not be able to support all families in need.”

The Facility Manager for South Kent Wind said it’s important that local corporations help fund community-based programs.

“South Kent Wind is proud to support a tremendous community-run program like the Saint Vincent de Paul Food Bank,” Kevin Aikenhead said.

“After seeing the volunteers’ hard work and the help they provide, we are happy to support their efforts.”

Kathryn Biondi, Vice Chair of the Chatham Kent Community Foundation, said the growing need for the services of the food bank prompted the foundation to offer its support.

“What an honour it was to meet the volunteers of the St Vincent de Paul Society in Wallaceburg,” Biondi said.

“I was very impressed with their dedication and the very important work they do providing food hampers. They indicated the need is ever increasing, and I’m glad the Foundation could assist.”
